There was a time not too long ago when former Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge would start one of their songs with a simple introduction: “This is about aliens that fly into your butt.” That little number was called “Aliens Exist,” a track inspired by DeLonge’s interest in all things extraterrestrial. A lot has changed since then. Tom parted ways with Blink last year to pursue a wide range of ongoing projects, including music with his band Angels & Airwaves, comics, and film, all under his company To the Stars Inc. Along the way, he’s managed to lay the groundwork for his most ambitious undertaking yet: a transmedia series called Sekret Machines, which will consist of novels (the first is titled Chasing Shadows, out April 5), nonfiction, a documentary, and music. The end goal is simple: to tell the mind-boggling stories behind mankind’s wildest encounters with unknown aerial phenomena and what the U.S. government is doing with that knowledge.

You seem skeptical. So was I. That’s why I hopped on the phone to discuss the project with the cosmos-minded rock star himself. Because much like you, dear reader, I want to believe.
