Want to know the trick to making cheap wine drinkable and enjoyable? Just add cola. Cool Teens™ in Spain have been doing it for decades with a concoction called kalimotxo, a surprisingly potable cocktail that’s equal parts red wine and cola. Some call it the poor man’s sangria, mostly because it tastes just like sangria (really!). And with Labor Day right around the corner, there’s no better beverage to mix up on the fly, especially if you’re grilling.

The origins of wine and cola can be traced back to the Basque region of Spain, but it’s the Uruguayans who perfected it. Their version is called siete y tres, a name that pretty much sums it up: Seven parts red wine with three parts cola.
